Alumna Participates in "Voices of a People's History" Event

Akemi Kochiyama '85 participated in a “Voices of a People’s History” discussion and performance Lincoln Center Presents event at the David Rubenstein Atrium Thursday.

 

Performers at the event, “Our History Has Always Been Contraband,” shared the words of an undocumented activist, an activist working in the wake of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, an activist working in the wake of the killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo., a queer activist working in the wake of H.I.V. and AIDS, and artists such as James Baldwin and Bob Dylan.

 

Akemi shared the words of her grandmother, Yuri Kochiyama, a Japanese-American teenager after the attack on Pearl Harbor, and her internment camp experience during World War II.

 

“I think those are the things we should fight for now so they won't happen again,” Yuri said.
