Specialized (SHSAT) High Schools

New York City Specialized High Schools (SHSAT Schools) provide students with accelerated academic programs. There are 9 specialized high schools throughout New York City; 8 of them require taking the SHSAT exam for a student to be considered for admission, and 1 of them requires submission of an audition or art portfolio. *Students apply to Fiorello LaGuardia High School for the Arts via an Audition process. Taking the SHSAT will not qualify a student for admission to LaGuardia. A student must complete an audition for a specific program at LaGuardia.

Register for the SHSAT

Families must register their student to take the SHSAT using their MySchools.nyc account. A student must take the exam on the designated date and time at their respective location.
Take the SHSAT

The SHSAT exam will take place on November 19 & 20, 2022. Every student who registers by the deadline will receive a ticket indicating the date, time, and place of the exam.
When to expect results

Every student who took the SHSAT exam in the Fall admissions will receive their results in March.

Score cutoffs are different every year. They are based on the availability of seats at each Specialized High School and the overall performance of the applicant pool on the SHSAT. It is difficult to predict to which Specialized (SHSAT) High School a student may be admitted.

Students may use these handbooks and practice materials from years past provided by the NYC Department of Education. Please make sure to read the handbook before taking the practice exams.
