School Study

The 5-6s social studies curriculum aims to have students explore their local environment and think first about themselves and their identity in our classroom community, and then as part of a larger community through the school study. The 5-6s take trips throughout the school to meet and interview members of the MCS community. The goal is to learn about the interconnectedness of various jobs and to learn more about the people who help our school function. We will pose questions such as: Who are all the people who work at MCS? What do they do and how do they take care of us? Where do they work and what tools do they use for their jobs? As we learn more about our community, the children develop their ability to ask questions, investigate, and communicate ideas. The school study is integrated with other subjects and incorporates many different elements such as mapping, writing, making observations, and building.
