SUSTAINABILITY SPOTLIGHT: Zero Waste Farm Outing Day!

By the Parent Led Sustainability Committee

Farm Outing Day is June 18 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the MCS Farm. This year we are excited to introduce a new Zero Waste initiative: No disposable drinking cups or plastic utensils will be provided. Only simple paper plates (just paper--not plastic coated) and paper napkins will be provided.

We are asking everyone to BYO water bottles, tumblers & utensils.

Here are some tips to create your zero waste Farm Outing Day kit:
  • Remember the most eco-friendly item is the one you already own! Simply roll silverware into cloth napkins and carry them in an upcycled take out container or tupperware. Things will stay organized and you’ll have a container for leftovers or to transport utensils home. Include cups for drinks or be sure to bring your water bottles. Kids cups and plates tend to work really well as upcycled picnic gear too.
  • You can build your zero waste picnic kit by shopping at your local thrift store. Second hand reusable cutlery, plates, and cups are a cheap and easy way to get started.
  • Ready to invest in travel cutlery? These bamboo sets are lightweight and great to carry for BBQs and everyday. Or check out this folding spork!
  • If you are ready to invest in your gear for the summer, here are some options:
