Maida Galvez

Maida Galvez, mother of Thomas ‘25 and wife of Ali Mencin, is a pediatrician whose clinical, research, and advocacy work is dedicated to promoting healthy environments for all children. She is Professor in the Department of Environmental Medicine and Public Health and the Department of Pediatrics at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She is Founding Director of the New York State Children’s Environmental Health Center (NYSCEHC), the first state-wide, publicly funded model for children’s environmental health services in the US. Since 2006, she has served as Director of the Region 2 Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit (PEHSU), a CDC and US EPA funded program that serves communities in New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. In her role as the Director of the Community Engagement Core (CEC) for the Mount Sinai Transdisciplinary Center on Early Environmental Exposures and as Co-Director of the CEC for the Mount Sinai Clinical and Translational Science Award Program, she brings investigators together with community partners to ensure that emerging research is transformed into program and policy changes that directly benefit frontline communities. She serves on the MCS Advisory Council and is a Consulting Trustee on the Farm Committee.
