Trout in the Classroom

This year MCS received a grant from the Catskill Watershed Corporation to participate in Trout in the Classroom, a project where the students get to observe trout growing from tiny eggs to silvery fish. As part of our Reimagining STEAM initiative, different subject specialists connected to this exploration of the growth cycle of trout.

Lo, the science and shop teacher, shared a report from the trout study:

About 50 trout were successfully released by our 8-9s into the East Branch of the Delaware River near our farm in Roxbury, NY.

In science, 7-8s observed the stages of the trout using magnifiers and microscopes, 8-9s learned about river ecology, 9-10s documented the trout’s weekly development and shared with 6-7s, and 5th grade Trout Supervisors managed weekly feedings and water testing.

Each of the 4-5s, 5-6s, and 6-7s classes observed the trout, read a book entitled Trout Are Made of Trees, and discussed the trout life cycle from egg to adult.

During electives, Upper School students coded trout movement trackers as well as trout-inspired video games.

In their other specials, classes are participating in trout-inspired art projects, songs, movement games such as “Trout, Trout, Swim Up My River”, and songwriting in Spanish.
