MCS Director Michele Sola greets students on first day of school

The excitement was palpable Thursday morning as students arrived at Manhattan Country School for the first day of the school year. MCS Director Michèle Sola and George Popovic, building maintenance and greeter extraordinaire, welcomed both children and their grown ups with hugs and high fives as they entered the front door. On the second-floor landing and in the gym friends reunited, sharing hugs and stories about how they spent their summer vacation.

First Day of Schol 8-9s

In classrooms, students met their new teachers and learned the details of their new morning routines and daily schedules. They decorated name signs and locker tags. They also engaged in activities designed to help them become better acquainted. In the 8-9s, new teacher Cosima led her students in a get-to-know-you exercise in which students shared their name, a creative movement and their preferred pronouns. The seventh- and eighth-graders engaged in group activities, include a hula hoop challenge in which they had to pass the hoop from person to person while standing in a circle linked hand-to-hand. And of course there was time spent at Central Park.

Seventh and Eighth Grade First Day of School Activity

For students in the 4-5s and 5-6s, it was a day to get just a taste of the MCS experience. Students made brief visits to the school to meet their teacher and see their new classroom. They will have their first full day of school next week.

After dismissal at noon, families made their way to the Arthur Ross Pinetum in Central Park for the annual Parents’ Association first-day-of-school picnic.

The Newest Members of the MCS Community

This year, MCS welcomes 58 new students—54 in the Lower School and 4 in the Upper School. Six new students are joining siblings who already attend MCS; two are following in the footsteps of their MCS alumni parents. Our new students represent 24 zip codes and reside in neighborhoods in Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Westchester. Two have recently moved with their families to the area from out of state, while three have relocated from out of the country.
