City Camp is Manhattan Country School's summer program for MCS students in the 4-5s through 9-10s, including new Lower School students joining the school in the fall. Through City Camp students broaden their MCS experience by being immersed in fun and engaging activities aligned with the school’s mission and values.
When is City Camp?
City Camp runs for three weeks in July, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The 2019 program runs from July 8 to July 26.
What will kids do at City Camp?
Two days a week, City Camp uses MCS classrooms and local community resources, including Central Park and the Urban Assembly Community Garden, to provide enriching activities. Kids attend classes including movement, visual arts, gardening and a city class aimed at developing a deeper connection with New York City.
This summer, City Campers will enjoy a food and cooking exploration class taught by Amanda Hallowell, our food program coordinator. This class will give children a unique and special opportunity to learn about fresh local ingredients and prepare some delicious dishes!
The other three days each week, City Campers go on trips to explore the city, including one trip a week to a local pool. Past trip destinations have included the Bronx Zoo, Museum of Natural History, Children’s Museum of the Arts, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Museum of the Moving Image and the High Line.
Who works at City Camp?
City Camp is run by co-directors Shani Brignolle (MCS' fifth-grade teacher) and Karen Zaidberg (MCS' sixth-grade teacher), and staffed with additional MCS teachers who know the Lower School kids well.
