6-7s students visited Walker Stevenson, a bee keeper for the Central Park Zoo, in his "bee yard" to learn about the dynamics of the colony and the different tools a bee keeper uses, and were able to taste spring and fall honey that the bees produced.

Upper School Director Maiya Jackson and Upper School teacher Nassim Zerriffi attended and led workshops at the Progressive Education Network (PEN) National Conference in Minneapolist/St. Paul, Minnesota the first weekend in October. The conference takes place every two years and is a diverse gathering of educators from around the country. The theme of the PEN Conference 2019 was Educating for Democracy: Navigating the Current and Channeling the Future of Progressive Education. Read more

When one is planting a garden from seed, there is a host of information on each seed packet. Days to germination, days to maturity, nutrition needs, ideal soil temperature and amount of needed daily sunlight. When growing mushrooms, there are guides for the various varieties. What species of tree is the best host, amount of watering and shade, but the timing of harvest is often unknown. Read more

MCS is a nut-aware school and due to the high number of nut allergies in our community, we request that all food brought into MCS be NUT FREE. The best way to determine if foods are nut-free is to read the label since brands should have a warning statement or allergen list. Read more
