At Manhattan Country School lessons about black history and culture are integrated into the curriculum, there are many black teachers, and teachers and administrators don’t take a zero-tolerance approach when dealing with conflict or disciplinary issues. In many schools across the country, especially inner-city public schools with a predominantly black student population, this isn’t the case. Read more

2018 Big Night Out!
Each year, Manhattan Country School honors excellence and leadership in progressive education, arts and sciences, social and environmental justice, and community activism with its Living the Dream Mentor Award. The 6-7s have been doing a neighborhood study, learning about the Upper West Side and more broadly, the different aspects of a neighborhood and what allows it to function. This is an extension of our earlier investigation into the school, specifically the different workers within it and how they help it operate on a day-to-day basis. In looking at our neighborhood, we are asking ‘What does a community need in order to function, and how do the people in that community help to support it?’ Read more
Del Rose Farm
Due to the unique nature of the Manhattan Country School Farm, it’s sometimes difficult to provide a contemporary experience of modern farming for our students. Even though we operate a farm with very diverse agricultural practices and products, everything we create is self-consumed by the MCS school community. As our founder Gus Trowbridge was often heard saying, “the only things we ship down the road are kids.” Read more
  This school year, Manhattan Country School is completing its New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS) accreditation self study. This process is more successful when there is broad input. The MCS Board would like to hear from the whole community. Please join us Tuesday, February 27, 2018, for our annual meeting for parents, trustees, faculty and staff where we will reflect on our current mission and gather insights for our self study. Nurse Katie Patterson began the meeting with a flu update: five confirmed student cases. She told us they were being extra vigilant with hygiene, wiping down surfaces with hydrogen peroxide wipes, etc. Washing hands is key. Read more
