6-7s students get to know their new school home by touring the building and documenting their observations.

Fifty years ago, on September 21, Manhattan Country School opened its doors for the first time. The day marked the realization of Gus and Marty Trowbridge’s dream of creating a school where equality, social justice, a diverse community and the inspiration of Martin Luther King, Jr. would form the basis of children’s education. Over the past five decades, MCS has grown from an experiment on East 96th Street to a formidable leader in education. Our robust curriculum develops students who are critical thinkers, full of curiosity and self-knowledge, and sensitive to social and environmental justice issues. Our teachers are thought leaders in progressive education, diversity, activism and farm-based education. Our alumni are changing the world in very real ways and our model has inspired the creation of other schools that share our values and approach to learning. Read more
9-10s Class Curriculum Night
Curriculum Night is usually a school-wide evening, acquainting families with their children’s classrooms and learning about teachers’ plans for the year. This year, we need to make a slight modification as most classes are settling into their space, but several of them are still in temporary locations. Read more

At the Manhattan Country School Farm, strong connections are made through food. The kitchen is the heart of our community. The products that are grown, raised and harvested in our garden, barn, greenhouse, orchard and sap house reach us all through the hands that prepare meals and by eating and celebrating each meal, family style, in the farmhouse dining room.
