- This past summer, Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen '80 helped launch She Built NYC, an effort to commission a new monument honoring women in New York City. It's an important first step in creating a collection of public art that more fully represents the diversity of our city and our shared history. - Farai Chideya ‘83 is an accomplished author with thousands of speeches under her belt and experience as an analyst for CNN. She even had a brief feature in a segment about Automation on HBO's Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (from 15:54). Read more
Big Night Out! is Manhattan Country School’s annual spring benefit featuring the Living the Dream Mentor Award ceremony, dinner, dancing and an online auction. Revenue from Big Night Out! helps MCS raise the more than $2 million needed to sustain its sliding-scale tuition program each year. Read more
On February 28, Manhattan Country School hosted its first School-to-Farm Supper in support of our long-standing farm-based education program in the Catskills that benefits students and educators from public and independent schools in New York City and upstate. Thanks to the vision of the School-to-Farm Supper Host Committee, the gym was transformed into a magical, candle-lit dining room. Read more
Katharine Garrison '81 is a documentary filmmaker who co-produced and edited the 2018 award-winning film, “United Skates,” about the African-American roller rink community. The film received many accolades, including the Tribeca Film Festival Audience Award, the IDA 2018 shortlist, and New York Times Critic’s Pick. Read more
“The route is long and the weather is usually cold, but one never tires of seeing education be this intentional.” – Frank Roosevelt On the morning of Monday, January 21, more than 250 students, parents, alumni and friends from the Manhattan Country School community gathered to begin the 2019 Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative March titled "Changing the System: Marching Toward Justice". Eighth graders visiting lawyer Vanessa Potkin at The Innocence Project
On Friday, March 8, 2019, the Manhattan Country School eighth graders traveled to various locations around the Tri-state area for the annual Eighth Grade Mentoring Day. Each year, the students attend an Eighth Grade Mentoring Day presentation and then share some of their career aspirations. Based on their responses, each student is matched with professionals in their fields of interest. During these visits, students experience what it is like to be in the shoes of these professionals from a wide range of industries. Read more
As we gradually double the size of our student body, Manhattan Country School's community is growing faster than ever. In addition to all the new faces that come through our doors each school year, we're also proud to have returning families. In the 2018-2019 school year, we have 16 MCS alumni who are also current parents! We also have 31 MCS alumni who have an MCS alum as a parent. For over five decades, MCS has provided a quality education to 1,500+ alumni and, considering how small of a school we are, we're delighted to see how many alumni want to provide the same quality of education for their own children. Anya Luna-Leibowits ‘14 has joined Manhattan Country School’s 4-5’s class as a volunteer classroom assistant during her breaks from Sarah Lawrence. Anya is in her first-year of college and majors in psychology. While commuting daily from the heart of New York to Westchester County, Anya has contemplated a career in child psychology and early childhood education. Sarah Leibowits, a 20+ year master teacher at MCS, and Anya’s mother, has inspired Anya’s dream of becoming an educator. Read more
What a game! MCS students, alum, and current and former parents participated in the 11th annual Community Basketball Game, held on February 15, 2019. Younger MCS students and others from the community packed the stands for the the exciting game, which also included basketball drills and prizes during halftime. Read more
