The El Sitio Feliz community garden, located on 104th Street and Lexington Avenue, provides a space for community members to express themselves through music, art and growing their own food. Manhattan Country School has maintained a relationship with this community garden for many years, as it has been an invaluable resource for nature education and outdoor learning in an area where green space is hard to come by.  This fall, four students in the Upper School and I engaged with this local... We did it! Because of the generosity of Manhattan Country School’s community, we surpassed our #GivingTuesday goal of raising $10,000. In fact, we received more than triple that amount ($31,727, not including the $10,000 match). Checks from those who participated by mail are still coming in. Thank you to everyone who joined the #GivingTuesday movement and made a contribution! #GivingTuesday gifts support MCS’ 2015-2016 Annual Fund and help us meet our annual operating expenses on East 96th... Hi, everyone! Happy Holidays! You will notice that the format of this year’s holiday book list is a bit different. Instead of giving a summary of all of the books, a selection of books is highlighted by a synopsis. This makes for a hopefully neater and less lengthy version. Just a reminder that these are only suggestions and not anyone’s idea of a “best of” anything or “must-read” assignment thingy list. Also, the ages are only a suggestion. Any of these books would be appropriate for a myriad... Read More

As part of Manhattan Country School’s 7-8s Family Study, the children in the class read about family heirlooms and discussed the question: “What is a passed-down item?” After reading stories such as The Keeping Quilt by Patricia Polacco and The Worry Stone by Marianna Dengler, the children were asked to bring in an item that had some significance in their families. We established that passed down items did not need to be things that were expensive but rather had great sentimental value.... Read More

It was a short season for Manhattan Country School’s varsity and junior varsity soccer teams. The varsity team played four games—winning two and losing two. Having fewer players on the field than their opponents proved to be a challenge at times, but Lee Solomon, the varsity soccer coach, says, “As a team, they played well together.” Junior Varsity Soccer Coach Jermaine Lloyd offered the following reflection on his team’s season: “Our young student athletes went 3-0, continuing the junior... Wednesday morning, 4-5s and 5-6s parents filled the Music Room to sing with Manhattan Country School’s two youngest classes. The annual 4-5s and 5-6s Sing is an opportunity for families to be introduced to their child’s music program as well as get a sense of how community is created through singing together. In keeping with the school’s mission, the children sang social justice songs, folks songs and children’s songs from around the world. While moving to music, the 4-5s and 5-6s impressed... Read More
