Black Lives Matter Week of Action

Manhattan Country School will participate in the national Black Lives Matter Week of Action at NYC Schools from February 1-5. New York City's BLM chapter is meeting every Thursday in January from 5-7pm to help plan the Week of Action. If you are interested in getting involved, sign up here. Educators, families, and students are welcome!  Additionally, the BLM National Steering Committee encourages educators, students and parents to participate in ongoing activations and reflections throughout this school year via the Black Lives Matter Year of Purpose. There are guiding principles for each month, and curriculum available for early childhood through high school. The BLM Steering Committee will host a Curriculum Share for educators on January 23 and January 24, and again in the spring, to support the ongoing nature of this work.

On Wednesday, January 20, a webinar entitled "Black Lives Matter in the Classroom: A Conversation with Experts", will feature Jesse Hagopioan and Denisha Jones, editors of Black Lives Matter at School: An Uprising for Educational Justice, as well as Caryn Davidson, Laleña Garcia, MCS 5-6s teacher, and Nassim Zerriffi, 7th & 8th Grade history teacher and activism coordinator, who will celebrate Laleña’s book, What We Believe: A Black Lives Matter Principles Activity Book. Students and adults are also invited to rock this year's BLM at NYC Schools logo, designed by a New York City high school student, with a variety of swag, including t-shirts, hoodies, masks, stickers, and onesies. There are also items with artwork designed by middle school and elementary school students.  All of the items are available here.
