High Fives and Hugs Mark the Beginning of the New School Year
Thursday morning students arrived at Manhattan Country School for the first day of the school year. Outside, MCS Director Michèle Sola and George Popovic, building maintenance and greeter extraordinaire, welcomed children and their grown ups with hugs and high fives as they entered the front door. As children headed up to their classrooms and parents mingled in the lobby, the building was filled with laughter and spirited conversations about summer vacations and the new year to come.
Once in their classrooms, students met their teachers, played get-to-know-you games and learned about their daily routines and schedules. In one 7-8’s classroom, new co-teacher Rosalinda Glennon read First Day Jitters. As the story ended, the children were surprised to discover that the one with the jitters was not a new student but in fact the new teacher. When noon rolled around for the 8/9s, one child exclaimed, “The day’s over! What happened?!” Upper School students filled the gym with energy as they played an interactive game involving a series of rock-paper-scissors competitions, introducing them to one of this year’s themes - Turning Points and Tipping Points.
Our 4-5 and 5-6 students came for brief visits to meet their teachers and see their classrooms, although one 4-5 happily remained for two hours playing with new classmates! Our youngest students will have their first full day of school next week.
After dismissal at noon, families made their way to the Arthur Ross Pinetum in Central Park for the annual Parents’ Association first-day-of-school picnic.
Welcome New Members of the MCS Community
This year, MCS welcomes 53 new students — 48 in the Lower School and 5 in the Upper School. Twelve new students are joining siblings who already attend MCS; six are following in the footsteps of their MCS alumni parents - the parents of a 4/5s child actually met as students at MCS! Our new students represent 25 zip codes and reside in neighborhoods throughout Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Westchester. And we are thrilled to have two Upper School students returning to MCS after living abroad. We invite parents of new students to our New Parent Breakfast on Friday, September 14 at 8:45.
Welcome Back Reception and Opening PA Meeting
We invite all parents to join us on Thursday, September 20 for our Welcome Back Parents’ Reception at 6 p.m. and the Opening Parents’ Association Meeting at 7 p.m. Childcare will be provided. Look for an invitation with more details in your email inbox next week.
