Manhattan Country School's annual Farm Outing Day at the MCS Farm.
Offered Monday through Friday, MCS’s Afterschool program provides families with extended-day coverage through a wealth of activities for students from the 4-5s through 9-10s and, depending on interest, Fifth and Sixth Grades. African drumming, nature exploration, sports, language classes, musical theater, and coding are some examples of the types of classes offered in Afterschool, where children learn by doing — a Manhattan Country School credo.

The hallmark of MCS’s Afterschool program is mixed-age groupings, where children of different grades interact, learn from each other, and form friendships. There are two sessions of Afterschool each academic year (known as Fall Session and Spring Session), with no gap between sessions to ensure continued extended-day coverage.

List of 4 frequently asked questions.

  • Q: When does Afterschool operate?

For the 2022-2023 school year, Afterschool is operating on a two-session basis. The first session (referred to as the Fall Session) will run from Monday, September 19 through Thursday, February 2. The second session (known as the Spring Session) will run from Monday, February 6 through Wednesday, June 14. For the Spring Session, we will be offering Afterschool on Mondays through Fridays whenever school is open, beginning at dismissal and ending with pickup between 5:30 - 6 p.m.
  • Q: How much does Afterschool cost?

For the 2022 - 2023 school year, all classes were fixed at a cost of $50 per day, with no additional materials fees. This covered a daily snack and three hours of coverage. The cost of Afterschool is determined based on what is needed to properly compensate our teachers while maintaining our low student-to-teacher ratio and may change from year to year. Class offerings and costs for the 2023-2024 school year will be sent to families in late August.

There are discounts offered when enrolling more than one child and when enrolling on multiple days. Families are charged their Afterschool fees monthly through SMART Tuition. The Auxiliary Programs Department is working to move Afterschool onto a sliding-scale similar to tuition.
  • Q: Do you offer emergency childcare?

MCS offers emergency childcare, known as Emergency Afterschool, to accommodate last-minute changes in parents’ and caregivers’ schedules at a fee of $40 (for a 4:30 p.m. pickup) or $60 (for pickup between 5:30 - 6 p.m.) per child. Those needing to utilize Emergency Afterschool should contact Caroline Biggers, Director of Auxiliary Programs, on the day they need coverage.
  • Q: How do I enroll my child in Afterschool?

Enrollment in Afterschool happens via Sign Up Genius. Families are sent a communication with class descriptions and links to enrollment in advance of the links going live. Information about the Fall 2023 session’s class offerings and the dates of the enrollment processes will be sent to families in late August.
