The Afterschool Knitting Club

Friday, November 2, 2018

I have the great pleasure of working with children on Thursday afternoons, I teach knitting to the 6-7’s and up. This fall while learning the basics of knitting the students make stuffed animals. So far, we have a great variety under construction: a chick, several cats, a tiger, bunny, and unicorns. The younger children are helped by the older. It is quite a wonderful moment when a project is finished and transforms into an animal. As new skills are learned each student will be able to do more and more challenging work. I have taught hundreds of children to knit, sew, and crochet. Our students are talented and up for the challenge.

Knitting and sewing are an integral part of our community as children typically work on sewing or weaving beginning in the 4-5’s to strengthen creativity and fine motor dexterity. We also have a textiles program at the MCS Farm, therefore it was very important to host a class in Afterschool that allowed a mirrored connection to the school’s farm-based programs. We are constantly searching for ways to give students a taste of the farm long before their first stay in the 7-8s.

Our knitting and sewing class allow every student to gain confidence as they diligently progress from basic knitting skills to being able to complete complex projects. Children can create tangible work at such a young age, as their craft flourishes so do their minds.

Most afternoons the second floor landing becomes a busy gathering spot for 70 to 80 students. Snack is shared before the children head to their classes. Each day, Monday through Thursday, there are a variety of enrichment-based, small group lessons. We are fortunate to have specialists that teach every week. Some instructors are from MCS, others are teachers from neighboring schools, professionals in their fields, or parents with specialties.

This year we are transitioning our youngest students into the Afterschool program by giving 4-5 5’s their own snack area and extra support. Each day there are classes specifically for this age group; these classes are designed for the pre-K mind, body and various stages of development.
