ACADEMIC SPOTLIGHT

MCS ArtWalk
7th/8th graders were offered a new elective this fall, taught by Deirdre Hollman (Myles 6-7s), Carol O’Donnell and Rachel Sussman, and called “Harlem Renaissance Art and Becoming an MCS Docent.” They examined lithographs, paintings, sculptures, and masks. They visited Essie Green Gallery where MCS grandparent Sherman Edmiston Jr told stories of how he got to know Romare Bearden and began selling his work. Russell Goings visited one class and read a journal entry in which Bearden defines art. A series of questions for the students followed: “What do you think the definition of art is?” “What is universal about it?” The students asked questions too: “Why did you collect these works? “Why did you want the collection to be at MCS?” Russell Goings doesn’t give straight answers. He’s a storyteller, a poet in the griot tradition. What a delight to hear students whose horizons have expanded to define art as “a biography of the self,” “your mind and what you think on paper,” “a way of speaking, telling a story visually.” Thursday night’s Art Walk and Gallery Talk is open to the community of MCS families, friends, and others who would like to be up close to a unique collection. Please come help us thank Russell Goings and acknowledge the dedication of the Art Advisory Committee.
