RESOURCES FOR EDUCATORS

Our curriculum is known for its emphasis on high academic expectations, creativity, multiculturalism, social justice, youth activism, and sustainability. Since our founding, we’ve served as a model for the integration of American schools.
Outreach
Over time, we have developed an outreach program that provides assistance to schools and professional development to teachers throughout the New York metropolitan area and internationally. The thrust of our program is to create a community of like-minded schools—both private and public—interested in the issues surrounding progressive and multicultural education, social justice, sustainability, and diverse communities. We frequently host educators who are curious about our sliding-scale tuition program, unique curriculum, and farm experience.

Gelernt Mentoring Program
We facilitate exchanges between educators who embrace a common view of education as a foundation for social change. Internships include short- and long-term placements in classrooms, combined with mentoring relationships with experienced teachers and administrators. They also include visits to other model schools, introducing Gelernt interns to a variety of teaching approaches, philosophies, and communities. In light of the parallels between our Civil Rights Movement roots and the early post-apartheid schools in South Africa, the Irwin M. Gelernt Mentoring Program established an initial exchange between Manhattan Country School and South African schools.
Recently, MCS teachers have visited schools in the Philippines and Mexico.
