Block Building

Block building is a cornerstone of the social studies curriculum in the three youngest classes at MCS.  As children build with the wooden unit blocks designed by progressive educator, Caroline Pratt, they engage in rich dramatic play as they express their understanding of the physical and social world in which they live and go to school. In working collaboratively to design block structures children may recreate what they have seen on a neighborhood trip. They practice important skills of negotiating, solving problems, and cooperating as they revel in the joy and wonder of the endless possibilities that the material of blocks has to offer.
