2018 LIVING THE DREAM MENTOR AWARD HONOREES

Each year, Manhattan Country School honors excellence and leadership in progressive education, arts and sciences, social and environmental justice, and community activism with its Living the Dream Mentor Award. This year, we honor four individuals who exemplify MCS’ vision and mission by promoting social justice through sports.

Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir, Founder, Muslim Girls Hoop Too and Dribbling Down Barriers

Bilqis Abdul-QaaderIn 2010, Bilqis became the first NCAA Division I basketball player to play while wearing a hijab. After college, she intended to play basketball professionally, but couldn’t because of an International Basketball Federation rule banning hijabs. While her own dream was benched, she spoke out for the next generation. Through her efforts, the ban was overturned in 2017. Today, Bilqis inspires young Muslim women as a sports instructor and motivational speaker.

Harris Friess ’98 and Lyle Friess ’00, Co-Executive Directors, Brooklyn Youth Sports Club

Harris Friess  Lyle FriessHarris and Lyle established the Brooklyn Youth Sports Club (BKYSC) in 2009 to provide an enriching educational setting for economically disadvantaged youth. Through the club, the brothers use athletics as a vehicle to inspire more than 300 students each year to fulfill their academic, physical and personal potential. BKYSC is driven by an ethical imperative to instill values of integrity, perseverance, self-esteem and hard work to empower student-athletes to be leaders in school, on the court and in the community.

Jermaine Lloyd, Founder, Back 2 Basics Academy

Jermaine LloydJermaine is the founder of Back 2 Basics Academy, a nonprofit organization that provides year-round basketball training. The academy’s mission is to help young boys and girls in New York City’s underserved communities develop critical-thinking and problem-solving skills and to prepare them for real-life challenges. Jermaine has more than 19 years of classroom teaching experience and more than 25 years in coaching and athletic training. Since 2003, he has taught physical education, science, and community service and has led Afterschool and City Camp activities at Manhattan Country School.

BIG NIGHT OUT! ENTERTAINMENT

We are thrilled to announce that hip-hop legend Pete Rock will be on the ones and twos at Big Night Out! this year. (Manhattan Country School alumnus Adrian Bartos ’83—aka DJ Stretch Armstrong—was supposed to spin at this year's event, but has a schedule conflict.)

Pete is a DJ, rapper and producer who was brought into the hip-hop scene by his cousin, the late Heavy D. He rose to prominence in the early 1990s as one half of the critically acclaimed group Pete Rock & CL Smooth. Pete has had a solo music career for more than two decades. During this time, he's recorded 11 albums and produced more than 30 artists across multiple genres: hip hop (The Notorious B.I.G., Public Enemy), R&B (Mary J. Blige, TLC, Monica), Rock (Mick Jagger), Pop (Madonna, Lady Gaga) and jazz (Robert Glasper). He has created dozens of remixes, including some that eclipsed the original songs in popularity. His blend of jazz, soul, and rap music unites people across race, class, gender, nationality and geography. We hope you'll join us on the dance floor at Big Night Out! as we groove to tunes spun by this music innovator.
